I became caught up in the life outside the day job and the internet and hadn't realised the post had gone live!
I'm glad everyone enjoyed the contribution.
StephB, I found the research about cosmetics very interesting. I didn't read it up all at once it has to be said. The books I cited have all been part of my browser reading at one point or another, and it was just a case of pulling it all together.
The Woolgar book I cited is excellent in showing how people related to cosmetics, bathing and not bathing in the Middle Ages. I had been confused by the conflicting data, but Woolgar sets out the arguments very well.
I am definitely going to give the nutmeg and rosewater hair perfume a try when I get a moment! :-)Elizabeth Chadwickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16911841862257909703noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386077972421065740.post-18339121369623951482010-09-18T09:56:17.453-04:002010-09-18T09:56:17.453-04:00I think of Cleopatra drinking vinegar, or whatever...I think of Cleopatra drinking vinegar, or whatever, but I forget about the middle ages, thanks for having Elizabeth here.Lisa Lickelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07798980644446426574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386077972421065740.post-9167598358977573942010-09-18T01:35:11.587-04:002010-09-18T01:35:11.587-04:00Love loved all the info! There were herbs that grew wild that could be used to add to bath water or make lotions and oils. My favorites are rosemary and lavender. Berries could be crushed and used to stain lips and color cheeks.

And I agree with you on the bathing. Even today there are some people who don't bathe very often and others that do. I did read something about early Christians and how some of them didn't like to bathe. Could this be why we think of medieval people as stinking?Kelley Heckarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05673342477988998070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386077972421065740.post-17438974531994546252010-09-17T13:40:18.158-04:002010-09-17T13:40:18.158-04:00Wonderful post, Elizabeth and Linda!Wonderful post, Elizabeth and Linda!Lindsay Townsendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11513558547686982857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386077972421065740.post-33353362723574994182010-09-17T12:48:52.537-04:002010-09-17T12:48:52.537-04:00I love medievals.
