Giveaway: THE TROUBLE WITH MAGIC by Patricia Rice

Linda Banche here. If you haven't read a Patricia Rice book, now's your chance to win a copy of The Trouble with Magic, the second book of Ms. Rice's paranormal romance Magic series set in Georgian England. The Magic series is the story of the Malcolm sisters, all of whom have magic, and the non-magic Ives brothers.

Sourcebooks has offered a copy of The Trouble with Magic to one of the people who comment on this blog (US and Canada addresses only). And this time, I’m the one who will select the winner. So, leave your comments with your email address in the comment section.

And the winner is phastings! Congratulations, phastings, and thanks to all who came over.

Do you like paranormal in your historicals? I usually don't. The paranormal tends to overwhelm the history, and the book becomes a  paranormal historical rather than an historical paranormal. But some authors, like Ms. Rice, manage to keep the history foremost. I've read the first book in her Magic series, Merely Magic. My review is here.

My first Patricia Rice paranomal was Mystic Guardian, the first book in her paranormal Mystic Isle series, set in France during the French Revolution. The French Revolution isn't my cup of tea, so I took out the library copy. I read the first five pages and then ran out and bought the book and everything else of hers I could find. And then I waited in suspense until the other two Mystic Isles books came out. I have my copy of The Trouble with Magic on my TBR pile.

What are your thoughts about paranormal in historicals?

I love paranormals - and I love historicals - however I - GASP - never read a paranormal historical! That is something I need to rectify immediately! :-) EXTREMELY fascinating!

I have never read a paranormal historical. I'm willing to give one a try. I'm going to go search out Merely Magic or Mystic Guardian. I've never read a Patricia Rice novel. I'm so behind!

I love variety and this sounds quite interesting. Historicals are my favorite so this could be a great mix. I recently found an author (Kathryne Kennedy) that writes historical fantasy which I loved and this seems like it could be similar.

I think I'd like a paranormal historical. I don't think I've read any yet. Usually the historicals I read tend to be cozy mysteries or Jane Austen sequels.

I am a big fan of historicals with a paranormal twist. I love Regency historicals and the idea of the paranormal in this era is not far-fetched at all. In fact, my second manuscript is a Regency historical with a paranormal twist.

There is something about an era in which carriages, fog, candlelight and the soul to believe in powers greater than technology that lends itself well to the paranormal.

I am a huge fan of historicals and do like it when they mix with paranormal. History gives some creditablity as much of it can be told in folklore, legends and mythology. Thanks so much for the giveaway! Sounds like a great book!

I have loved Patricia Rice's books from the moment I found one. Had to buy all I could find. Unfortunately a few months ago I lost almost everything of value to robbery including all my computers and other things. They left my books for the most part alone. At least my paperbacks, they did steal the 2 big bookcases of hardbacks though. Anyway I have not recovered financially from that yet do I do not have her latest books. But
I sincerely want them badly. To get a library copy won't satisfy my reading quest, I still need my own copies of all her wonderful books.

Felicia and phastings, I'm surprised you've never read an historical paranormal. Lots of books nowadays have paranormal elements in them. While they're not my favorite, if they make for a good story, I'm happy. You'll love Patricia Rice. She's one of the best. And no, she didn't pay me to say that. *g*

Hi catslady. Nothing wrong with trying something new. You don't have to like it. And if you try a library book and don't like it, you can always bring it back with no loss to you.

Michelle, I read cozy mysteries and Jane Austen sequels, too. I like Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries and Sharon Lathan's and Mary Lydon Simonsen's Jane Austen sequels.

Louisa, you've hit on an important point. Paranormal is easier to believe in when the era still had more belief in the supernatural than we have.

Hi Margaret, there are lots of fans of paranormal historicals. That's why they're so popular now.

Ho Robin. Happy hunting. Most of Ms. Rice's books are available as ebooks now, so have a ball!

Lainey, sorry about your loss. Actually, I'm surprised they took the hardbacks. I didn't think there was much of a market for them. But I can understand you need to own books. If I love a book, I want my own copy. The ones I don't like or are so-so, I take out at the library.

I don't mind paranormal in my historicals as long as what you said, Linda. The paranormal doesn't overwhelm the history. I agree with everything you said actually. I enjoy Patricia's books. This would be a nice win! Thanks.
